4-H Poultry Project

Each spring, we place an order for two breeds of baby chickens.  This project is open to Rhea County 4-H members in 4th-12th grade. 4-Her’s wishing to participate will fill out an application and pay approximately $45 to receive 15 of one breed or the other, and they will arrive sometime in March.  Each student can purchase one set of 15.  Students then raise these chicks until our county fair in August at which time they will select their three best pullets and bring them to the fair for judging.  The judge will then select the Grand and Reserve Champion pen of each breed, and then we will auction off their entries.  All proceeds from the auction go directly to the 4-H member.  For more information about this project, please contact the UT Extension Office at 423-775-7807.
